Street Cars Turn Up The Heat in Michigan
On August 23rd, 2014 local enthusiasts and street cars from across the country came together for the Ultimate Street Car Association’s eighth outing of the 2014 season at Michigan International Speedway. 46 cars rumbled through the gates of MIS on Saturday signifying the start of an epic weekend that tested both the driver’s skills and their vehicles’ mechanical abilities.
Saturday’s events kicked off with the Lingenfelter Design and Engineering Challenge, where the 46 entries were evaluated for their overall aesthetics as well as their streetable performance. After the judges had made their rounds, it was time for drivers to fire up their engines and line up for the Wilwood Disc Brakes Speed Stop Challenge and the Ridetech Autocross. Participants racked up an impressive 1,022 combined laps between the two events before they headed out on the 61 mile Detroit Speed Road Rally later that the afternoon. The exciting rally would bring drivers to the impressive Lingenfelter Collection for the Holley Welcome Party. On display were over 150 cars constructing one of the greatest car collections in the United States making it the absolute perfect stop for drivers to relax, enjoy their surroundings and grub on some excellent food provided by the USCA.
First thing Sunday morning, drivers were taken out on the track to study MIS’ road course and prepare themselves for the challenge ahead. After they took a few lead/follow laps, they broke into the three run groups and the BF Goodrich Hot Lap Challenge began. The cars zipped around the track for a few hours until it was time for a quick lunch and refuel. The second half of the event went smoothly and drivers kept a consistent flow of laps giving everyone ample time on the track. After a whopping 938 laps, the drivers headed back to the pits to find out who would be headed to the OUSCI this November.
The awards kicked off with the K&N Spirit of The Event award which was given Bob Bertelsen who had shown incredible persistence after spending Saturday night swopping out the clutch on his 1969 Chevrolet C10 pickup so that he could finish the event. Spirit of The Event winner from the Motorstate Challenge Mike Werner used his free ticket and attended the event to activate his OUSCI invite. Bryan Johnson took the top spot in the GT3K class in his beautiful Camaro with a grand total of 117.167 points, Andy Smedegard and his Honda S2000 seized the number one seat in the GT2K class with 116.167 points, and Ronnie Soliman dominated the AWD class with his Mitsubishi Evo scoring an impressive score of 120.1 points. The USCA is also happy to announce that we had another participant spend his birthday weekend with us; although Aaron Oberle may not have won his class he was given one heck of a birthday surprise. He was presented with a brand new engine for his ride compliments of his lovely wife! Now that is the best birthday gift any enthusiast could ask for.
