Feature Interview – Martin Pond
Mercury Zephyr Wagon
In this episode of the OSUSC podcast we were fortunate enough to bring on Martin Pond for another of our in depth “car and driver” feature interviews. Martin was the very first Spirit of the Event winner in the OSUSC Series ever, but he’s likely most famous for being the fast guy in either a Ford Fairmont or Mercury Zephyr wagon! He has also done a terrific job of having “fun on a budget” and took a recent podium finish in the Speed Stop at Charlotte.
As you’ll hear in the interview, Martin’s first true competitive laps came in the OPTIMA series just last year. He chose the Fairmont/Zephyr platform specifically because it was unique as well as an affordable way to get a Fox Body chassis (79-93 Mustang) but with a longer more stable wheelbase that would accept all of the best Fox Body Mustang components of the era. His Zephyr wagon has a 50/50 weight balance, a Cobra IRS system in the rear, an SVO Mustang front sub-frame, and other “hand picked” Fox Body go fast components (via Craigslist) as well. More unbelievable is that he was able to assemble his entire wagon for roughly $6K as a result!
Martin also recently won a Legend Gear LGT-700 high revving 5-speed transmission at Thunderhill as well which is now installed in his Zehpyr! This transmission is known for it’s compact design (which reduces or prevents the “cutting” required of floors for most installs), high power handling capability, and quick shifting capability even at high revs (up to 8000 RPM), all of which are features that have worked to Martin’s advantage. Legend Gear will be awarding another 3 transmissions this year to lucky OSUSC candidates as well!
If you would like to reach out to Martin (or follow his adventures) you may do so via his Facebook page.
Thanks for the great interview, Martin!
